When individuals first seek treatment, either voluntarily or gently pushed by loved ones or the courts, the first part of the process is having an open-mind to trust the process. It requires a willingness to accept help and possibly enter into a treatment center or seek professional services, including but not limited to therapy, psychiatric services, or recovery coaching.

THE FOUR DIMENSIONS OF RECOVERY

There are four major dimensions to support an individual in recovery: health, home, purpose, and community.

Health: Positive choices that proliferate healthy lifestyle choices, both emotionally and physically. Nutrition can play a vital role in one’s recovery. Find out more.

Home: Home is a place where safety and security comes first. To sustain long-term recovery, creating a safe environment is important. Many individuals, after leaving treatment, will find that 3-6 months of sober living can foster healthy boundaries by providing a safe home environment. Find out more.

Purpose: Finding a purpose in life–taking a commitment at a mutual help meeting or landing a job–is one way to build a foundation of recovery. In many ways, self-esteem is harmed or completely wiped away during alcohol or drug misuse. The cycles of shame and guilt drive ambition away and purpose of living is all but diminished. Discovering a new purpose is essential in the foundation of recovery.

Community: Knowing that one does not have to do it alone is reassuring and comforting. Building lasting relationships with men and women who are supportive can establish connections with other people. Some say the disease of alcoholism is a “disease of loneliness.” Build and connect with others to provide a network of support.

If treatment is the first part of the process, what happens after treatment? There are several options:

  1. IOP: Intensive Outpatient Programs. IOP is a treatment option that provides structured support in a program setting that does not require detox or residential services. Often the programs are 10-15 hours a week, including educational classes, groups, and individual therapy sessions. Drug screening is a common practice at IOPs.  Find out more.
  2. Aftercare Plans: After treatment plans can include recovery coaching, on-going counseling, random drug-screening, and/or attendance at group sessions. Find out more.
  3. Sober Living: Structured sober living homes offer support in a transitional phase after inpatient treatment. The step-down from treatment and before independent living provides accountability, structure, and support from others in recovery. Find out more.
